WEGH Group has completed the installation of tram track infrastructure using ballastless systems at Piazza Baldissera in Turin, one of the city’s most strategic and heavily trafficked road junctions, with peak traffic volumes exceeding 5,000 vehicles per hour.

The works are part of a major infrastructure redevelopment and urban traffic reorganisation project, aimed at improving traffic management, enhancing public transport and promoting more efficient and sustainable urban mobility.

Piazza Baldissera Redevelopment and the Restoration of Tram Line 10

The project involved a comprehensive reorganisation of the road network at Piazza Baldissera, including the transformation of the junction from a roundabout into an intelligent traffic light-controlled intersection and the integration of tram line 10 into the new layout of the square.

The works allow for the restoration of the double-track section between Via Cecchi and Via Chiesa della Salute and Via Bibiana, helping to improve traffic flow management and increase the capacity and reliability of tram services in an area characterised by high traffic volumes.

The Benefits of Ballastless Track Technology for Tramway Infrastructure

For the installation of the tram track infrastructure, WEGH Group used a ballastless track solution designed to ensure high standards of track geometry stability, reduced maintenance requirements and seamless integration into the urban environment.

This technology contributes to the quality and durability of the infrastructure, meeting the needs of a complex road junction such as Piazza Baldissera, where public transport must coexist with road traffic and urban spaces.

A Project Focused on Environmental Sustainability

The works were carried out in compliance with the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM), using materials containing recycled and recovered content, low-environmental-impact machinery and construction methods designed to minimise energy consumption and emissions.

The project also included sustainable water management solutions, such as permeable pavements and natural filtration systems.

The completion of the tram track infrastructure at Piazza Baldissera represents another contribution by WEGH Group to the development of urban tramway infrastructure, through technological solutions that combine performance, urban quality and environmental responsibility.
