New Technology to Reduce Level Crossing Noise

WEGH Group has developed a new technological solution designed to reduce night-time noise from level crossings in residential areas, helping to minimise disturbance for nearby communities.

The innovation stems from the need to meet the requirements of railway infrastructure managers and the communities where level crossings are located near residential areas. In these settings, audible warning signals can be particularly noticeable at night, when background noise levels are generally lower.

An Ambient Light Sensor for Automatic Warning Bell Volume Adjustment

To address this issue, WEGH Group’s engineering team has developed a new configuration of the TD96/2 electric barrier operating mechanism for level crossings, integrating an ambient light sensor that automatically detects changes in surrounding light conditions.

The sensor enables the system to adjust the sound level of the warning bell according to day and night conditions. During the day, the bell operates at its standard sound level, while at night the system automatically lowers the volume, helping to reduce noise in surrounding residential areas.

A Solution Combining Railway Safety and Community Well-Being

The system operates fully automatically and requires no operator intervention. The adjustment affects only the sound level of the warning bell, while the essential functions of the electric operating mechanism and barrier movement remain unchanged.

This new technology expands the configuration options available for WEGH Group’s level crossing solutions, providing a practical response to the needs of railway infrastructure located in urban and residential environments.

An innovation that highlights WEGH Group’s technological expertise and contributes to the development of railway infrastructure that is increasingly responsive to local conditions and the well-being of surrounding communities.
