Systems for the protection of level crossings: barriers and other devices

Our company offers solutions in full compliance with global railway regulations and based on the specifications issued by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, an organization internationally recognized for its high safety standards.

The latter are necessary to ensure the safety of both motorists crossing the railway crossing and train passengers. When a train approaches, the level crossing systems receive the closing command from the detection sensors and, at the same time, the street lights and bells are activated, indicating the imminent closure of the barriers. At the moment when all these operations are completed smoothly, the train clearance light comes on. The passage of the train over the crossing is monitored by an axle counter system that guarantees the command to reopen the barriers in less than two seconds, only after the entire train has passed. These are a series of delicate steps that require reliable and safe solutions.

Il sistema eLCSP (electronic Level Crossing Safety & Protection)

 

To ensure total safety of the crossings, in WEGH Group we have introduced the eLCSP system (acronym for Electronic Level Crossing Safety & Protection). It is an electronic system of command and control that, through electronic components (PLC, Programmable Logic Controller) in 2oo2 configuration, is able to safely ensure the automation of the sequence of closure and reopening of level crossings, controlling the barriers, the light-acoustic signals on the road side, and the light signals on the train side. It is possible to configure the operating logic to manage different scenarios, without making complex changes to the hardware: a feature that ensures a high level of flexibility.

eLCSP is supplied already configured for the application chosen by the customer, the relevant software modules are in fact installed upstream, taking into account the specificities of the crossing. Moreover, the eLCSP system does not require special maintenance operations, because there is a diagnostic system that operates through ad hoc sensors able to predict the state of degradation.

eLCSP is certified with Railway SIL 4 (Safety Integrity Level), which is the highest degree of safety integrity, defined as the level of risk reduction guaranteed by a safety function, or specified as a target level of risk reduction. An example of the quality that distinguishes all of our group’s electronic level crossing systems.
