An intervention on the railway line Udine-Tarvisio, on the routes Gemona–Carnia, Carnia-Pontebba and Pontebba–Tarvisio, represents for the Italian railway network and for the IPA-division of WEGH Group, the first project of ballastless systems application.
The project consisted in the construction of a new railway line to substitute the existing one, with a relative design of a slab track superstructure.
In the points where the new line crossed the existing one, were designed special self-supporting railway slabs which made it possible not to interrupt the transit of trains during the execution of works.
The railway route runs almost entirely in galleries and on viaducts. The total length of the track is of 75 km. The usage of slabs allowed to reduce the vertical dimensions on the bridges because the concrete base is formed from the same framework with significant cost reduction.
